Post without a title. Further musings from: The 1949 Affair

I’ve been having quite a lot of problems with this book. One scene has been bugging me, causing me sleepless nights. And the difficult thing to explain is that it’s a scene that’s never going to be published. You see, while it’s relevant to the characters; it’s not relevant to the story.

Lucy is falling in love with the enigmatic Von Schmidt. It was always on the cards; indeed some might say from the moment he tells her they’re husband and wife, it was a forgone conclusion. She wants to take it further – well when you’re 18 hormones take over –  but he seems reluctant, determined to remain her avuncular. He has his reasons. And at this point in the tale, he does not want them revealed.

But Lucy has stopped functioning. She refuses to cooperate with the re-writes, explain how she found out about the second entrance to the underground facility.

Something has to be sorted out between the two. But how to do it?

What to say?

And how as an author to hint and yet not show, nor even tell?

Perhaps, if Mark had been around and not a prisoner, there would have been a different solution. But Lucy has no best friend in which to confide her woes. She can’t  ask the Madman of Leytonstone, and she can’t even ask Frances Stephenson ( a woman who should know how to go about these things) because Frances is dead.

Help comes from an unlikely source. Two throw away lines – chapters apart; and honour is satisfied.

This review is from: The End of the Pier Affair (The Secret of Aldwych Strand) (Kindle Edition)

One of the best reads I’ve had in a while. The characters move back and forth in time uncovering surprising twists and turns in our history. The characters are interesting and lively, the story takes you on a journey and urges you to read on until the end. Overall, ‘The End of the Pier Affair’ is a must read for teenagers and adults alike.

The Professional Edit

it’s getting really exciting here. The freebie promotion weekend back in August, shifted a decent amount of books and brought some interesting feedback, for which I thank you.

It also brought an Angel onto the scene… someone prepared to stump up the money for a professional edit. Yes, I know there’s no such thing as a free lunch but the deal we worked out was acceptable to both; and I’m now on tender-hooks as I wait for the edit to pop into my in box. I’m interested to see what a 4th pair of eyes has done to this dyslexics work.

I shall, as always, keep you posted…

End of the Pier – Thoughts after Day 1 of the Kindle Promo

It’s been a  busy weekend… scrub that: it is a busy weekend.

I’ve put the first book up free on a promo weekend, to boost the books profile and it’s working.  I was sceptical but I thought: “hell what have I got to lose?” Nothing.

So far, it’s going well.   People are giving the tale ago. They are are coming back positively. Telling me what I know ( that it needs a bit of a polished edit). Heck there’s only so far a girl can go on her own; telling me they’re enjoying it none the less.

Time of course will tell, but the promos doing what I want. It’s getting the book out there. It’s drumming up enough interest to get an offer of help with the editing, from someone whose writing I’ve admired for a long time. People are also starting to ask if there’s a 2nd one.

I may not be JK Rowling. I may not even be Sarah E Smith yet. But I’m now able to say : I’m an author (I think! 😉 )

Mark Birch here,

the ‘ero of the piece. Putting my side of the events out here

It was like this, Luce wanted some pictures – right? But well, she’s the class geek and can’t be trusted out there on her own. So. me being the football captain – well it fell to me to keep an eye on her.

Well how was I to know that there’s a Time Distortion at the End of Southend Pier. Well it’s not the kind of thing they tell you in history is it? That would be too interesting.

Anyways – to cut a long story short; we aren’t in Southend anymore. We’re in London – 1909 to be precise, and some daft bugger’s trying to kill Lloyd George and his mate Churchill. And me and Luce are right in the thick of it.

Bouncing around Time we have to stop the world as we know it,  being completely destroyed!

But it’s not as easy as it sounds, because there’s this Italian inventor geezer – who’s not only in charge of the Secret Underground Facility under Aldwych Station on the Strand -but also has the hots for my best friend…

Now available to purchase on Kindle and in paperback from Amazon

The End of the Pier Affair

If you go down to the pier today, you’d better not go alone.
It’s lovely down on the pier today but safer to stay at home

Lucy knew that; that’s why she took Mark with her.  But they were only going to take a few photos of the out of bounds section; it wasn’t like they were going to do anything dangerous…

But the moment you do one stupid thing, there’s no escape.

Whisked from the relative safety of Southend Pier, Lucy and Mark find themselves in a top secret underground facility. Not that they know that at the time – they think they’re just in the tunnels of the doomed Aldwych/Strand Station.

When they find they’re actually in 1909 – not 2013; they decide to explore.

Arriving in the East End of London, they they do their second stupid thing, as they stop a horse and carriage from crashing.

After that things get weird.

Someone is trying to kill both the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Home Secretary and will stop at nothing to achieve this end – even if it means destroying the whole of Time to do it!

From East End of  London to 11 Downing Street; From the Maiden Voyage of the Titanic to Dover Castle – you need to join the friends as they try to keep history as we know it – not as others would prefer it to be…

The Secret of Aldwych Strand: The End of the Pier Affair is now on Kindle.
